SM4CC SERIES: HOW EARTH DAY WAS COMMEMORATED IN NIGERIA

Yesterday, Sunday April 22, the world celebrated the 42nd annual Earth Day, a global event meant to celebrate the Earth and raise awareness for environmental causes. April 22 is observed as Earth Day every year, as a tool to raise ecological awareness; bringing attention to climate change and pollution, and also highlighting ways to save energy. According to the U.N., International Mother Earth Day is celebrated to acknowledge our reliance on the Earth and its ecosystem for life and sustenance and to promote a collective responsibility in achieving harmony with nature.

Earth Day can be traced to April 22, 1970, when Gaylord Nelson, a US Senator, headed an environmental teach-in with over 20 million participants. “…Groups that had been fighting against oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, freeways, the loss of wilderness, and the extinction of wildlife suddenly realized they shared common values...”

“…As the millennium approached…another campaign, this time focused on global warming and a push for clean energy…Earth Day 2000 sent world leaders the loud and clear message that citizens around the world wanted quick and decisive action on clean energy…” Now in its 42nd year, this year's Earth Day theme is "Mobilize the Earth", actively encouraging world leaders to put us on the path to sustainability and take the green economy seriously.

To mark the International Earth Day in Nigeria, there were public awareness campaigns, essay competitions, art exhibitions etc. I must applaud these efforts and say kudos to those who organized these activities. But, I know I am not the only one who thinks these activities are barely enough for a country such as Nigeria, where issues that were being thrashed out as far back as 1970 in the US are still very much prevalent in our country. What then do we say about global warming and clean energy, which were taken up in year 2000? Keep in mind that, countries with much better greener attitudes such as the US and Honduras, had volunteers gather for a fifth-annual tree planting event under an initiative known as “MillionTreesNYC” and participate in a reforestation program at the Rosy Walter Zoo in central Honduras; the program a part of a series of environmental initiatives across Central America, respectively.

For a while now, last month especially, it’s being quite hot in Lagos, Nigeria – a friend joked that Lagos had relocated to hells’ backyard. Statistics show that the warmest average max/ high temperature for Lagos is 33 °C (91 °F) in February & March and the coolest average min/ low temperature is 21 °C (70 °F) in August, the average temperature for last month was 91 °F high, 75 °F low, according to The Weather Channel. Hence, while the warmest average stayed within what was expected, the coolest average went higher by 5 °F. This, amongst other numerous issues, should be a source of concern as something is definitely wrong.

Also, it is raining across parts of Lagos, Nigeria (a day out of at least two hundred and thirty four (234) days of rainfall expected this year, unfortunately, I have not being able to lay my hands yet on confirmed data for comparison purposes yet, 234 days of heavy downpour is quite extraordinary) as I write this, prompting memories of last years’ flood. This has got me thinking and I can’t help but conclude that somehow, Nigeria and our leaders, are paying only a passing attention at Earth Day Networks’ and other similar organizations such as the U.N, activities in relation to matters such as climate change, the environment etc.

Clearly, with this kind of ‘dynamic’  weather here in Lagos, coupled with the gas flaring and oil spills in the Niger Delta, desertification in the North etc. a lot more needs to be done and here I am, only stating the problems and pointing accusing fingers at our leaders. Nevertheless, I have made a first step in the right direction, for it is only when an individual is fully aware of and understands a problem, can he/she then go about solving it. Furthermore, an adage says “when you point an accusing finger, remember the remaining directed back at you”. This simply means we all have our roles to play and in the great words of John F. Kennedy, “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country”. This is what organizations such as the Community Conservation and Development Initiatives (CCDI), Heinrich Boll Stiftung (HBS) Foundation and individuals such as Doyinsola Ogunye of Kids Clean Club and I, are doing.

Introduction To Grants' Thoughts (Consider It My Mission Statement)

Hello people. It’s my second post and I’m not yet tired, yaay.  Lol! The excitement is much, on my part, and if I can get you to feel only a little of that, my job (more like hobby) here would be totally worth it. Really. So, thanks once again for being here on this blog (and thinking those thoughts that would basically answer the question – do I want to follow this blog?) when you could have been on any other blog in the world, I really appreciate it!
Now, back to the question I stated in the past paragraph – do I want to follow this blog? – let me quickly say a few things that are gon help you answer that as truthfully and quickly as you can, without the emotional pain and drama -lol. A quick “something” to start.
I follow Michael Skolnik on twitter and amongst other things; he’s the political director to Russell Simmons. He also gives character to the term social activism. Due to his tweets and later, articles during the Occupy Wall Street protest, KONY 2012 and most recently, Trayvon Martins’ murder, I was forced to get involved in these issues. I read up on them and decided to take stand – on twitter mostly! Now, while a lot had/has to be done to contend with these issues, there’s no denying the huge part the social media now plays – a full write up on this soon. So, when someone tweeted at me saying “some people take panadol (a pain relieving drug) for other peoples’ headache” I knew she couldn’t understand. How could she possibly understand the effect of twitter when she’s on it to amass followers and the shallow satisfaction that provides? How could she know that it was only by tweeting that people could get informed about issues and hopefully be motivated to do something about it? That it’s only on twitter, and other social media, that you can easily find people, like minds from every walk of life possible, who together through collective action achieve an aim; whatever it is? That it’s all our single voices that become the loud noise that disrupts and causes action? How could she understand?
The Occupy Wall Street Protest, KONY 2012 and Justice for Trayvon Martin achieved whatever level of attention (and success) they are garnering due to our individual voices. Michael Skolnik showed me I had a voice I could and should use - on twitter. I have decided to take it further by creating a blog; a place where I can shout so loud till somebody hears me. That’s the primary reason for this blog!
My profile reads evolving activist, creative enthusiast and aspiring writer so I’m gon be “shouting” on a whole lot of things, with focus on the three outlined traits – there’s gon be something here for everyone, if not more than one thing sef. The language I would be using in my posts is gon switch between formal, semi formal (like this one) and informal, depending on what a particular post is about. There are gon be posts on personal experiences and personal opinions (although I seriously wonder how personal I can get? Shout out to all the bloggers who are basically writing/filling electronic diaries – you are very strong oh, the thought of how you can share the details of your life with the world comfortably is one making the constant rounds in my head. Who knows, I might be able to do it?). There are also gon be very objective posts whose sole purpose is to educate, no sides would be taken, I’d just simply be stating the facts. I’m gon be writing on everything yo! So best you see it as one exciting journey that’s never gon end – kinda like “The Magic School Bus”, who remembers the cartoon series?
My posts are gon be concise and straight to the point (I hear my ‘predecessors’ ramble on and on, hehe). They are also gon be very engaging so feel absolutely free to (and please always endeavor to) use the comment section. I’d also love to know what you’re thinking! Err, what else? Hopefully, I have succeeded in convincing and not confusing you (last statement use to be a favorite closing line for debates then in high school. I wonder if anyone still uses it.) on why this blog should be bookmarked, Favorited and visited constantly.
Peace y’all.

WELCOME! WELCOME!! WELCOME!!!

Hi there - you reading this, if you are actually reading this, sorry. Err, forgive my initial rambling but you see, I created this blog (oh, thank you very much) and somehow I can't seem to find it on Google so I thought a little introductory post might solve that problem. Hence, my earlier rambling 'cause I actually don't expect anyone to be reading this....until later of course. (I've decided I'm gon leave this post up). Yaay!!
So, lets do a brief run through of what this blog is gon entail (this is going to be amended as deemed necessary during its lifetime, which I sincerely hope would be for as long as the internet lasts, hehe..) and the journey to starting/creating it.
I met a great guy last week, hopefully he's gon drop a guest post - also a lot of other celebs *hands clasped, head bowed* and he said as far as he was concerned, everyone should have a blog. That struck me, added to the fact that a blog has always being a useful tool for being cool (the debate for that would hold at another time). Seriously though, as my profile states, I'm an aspiring writer and as such I have a very active imagination and I'm always  thinking - like the average human. But while the average human does whatever he does with his thoughts, I've decided to put mine down, on this electronic pages - sort of an electronic diary or something right?
Err, the internet's gon go off in another five minutes so kindly pause this reading and grab a bite or something - I gotta publish this and see if my theory, which i propounded earlier (remember? 1st paragraph?) works.
Welcome once again - we on our way to GREATNESS I assure you.
